Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowdays many people are suffereing from Insomnia that is difficulty in getting proper sleep. This is one of the major concerns in recent times. I think exessive use of mobile phones is the main reason of this problem and this can cause anxiety or depression.

People use excessive smart devices during their sleep times. Their blue light supress the melatonin hormone release in human body which is a sleep hormone. Also, people forget their time by looking reels, videos or movies. This can affects your sleep cycle.

Lack of sleep leads to so many health problems like anxiety or depression. At night, normall cortisol hormone also known as stress hormone level drops which helps in getting proper sleep. But, if you do not getting proper sleep due to any reason then this hormone level never drops and that leads to stress which turns in to depression and anxiety in the future. Also, proper sleep stimulates growth hormone which is necessary in building muscles. If people dont get proper sleep then it will affects their growth.

Furthermore, improper sleep leads to another problems also like tiredness, inability to focus on their work, hairfall issues and acne issues.

People should avoid screen time one hour before their sleeping time so that you can get proper sleep and work sufficiently on the next day. People should read books or talk with their families or partners before sleep so it will help in getting proper sleep and relationships will become stronger.

In conclusion, improper sleep leads to so many problems so people have to understand the reason behind it and work on it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the task by discussing the problems caused by lack of sleep, such as anxiety, depression, and physical issues, and offering solutions like reducing screen time and engaging in relaxing activities. Your main ideas are present, but they tend to be somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding anxiety and depression, and lack full elaboration with concrete personal examples. For instance, mentioning that blue light suppresses melatonin shows good general knowledge, but the supporting points remain somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, ideas need to be extended more thoroughly with specific examples or broader consequences. Overall, all parts of the prompt are addressed, supporting a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement with distinct paragraphs introducing the problem, the causes, the health effects, additional problems, and solutions, followed by a brief conclusion. However, the progression between ideas can be mechanical, relying heavily on repetitive transition words such as 'Also' and 'Furthermore' to link sentences. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting between 'people' and 'you' within the same paragraph. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs are very short and could be better integrated to build a more cohesive argument. These features place your coherence and cohesion at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your main points effectively. You make some good attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'insomnia', 'melatonin hormone', 'cortisol hormone', and 'growth hormone'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'Nowdays' instead of 'nowadays', 'suffereing' instead of 'suffering', 'exessive' instead of 'excessive', and awkward phrases like 'looking reels' instead of 'watching reels' or 'scrolling through reels'. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures like 'if you do not getting proper sleep' and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and subject-verb agreement. Examples include 'Their blue light supress' instead of 'suppresses', 'do not getting' instead of 'do not get', 'this hormone level never drops and that leads' which contains run-on tendencies, and 'improper sleep leads to another problems also' where 'another' should be 'other'. Punctuation is generally basic. Because these errors occur frequently and occasionally distract the reader, this warrants a Band 5.5.
