Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the problems caused by a lack of sleep and potential solutions. The introduction sets up the essay structure, and the body paragraphs touch upon reasons and effects such as health implications, screen time, and work schedules. However, the prompt specifically asks 'What problems can lack of sleep cause?', and while the essay mentions being exhausted and stressed, it focuses heavily on the *causes* of sleep deprivation (smartphones, work schedules) rather than deeply elaborating on the physical, mental, or professional problems it creates. Ideas are presented and supported with examples, such as the 2015 survey, but the development of the 'problems' aspect is somewhat limited. Therefore, it meets the requirements for a Band 6.0 as it addresses all parts of the task, though some parts are developed more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, causes, solutions, and conclusion. Logical connectives and transition phrases such as 'To start with', 'Another crucial reason', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, phrases like 'the one of the primary reason' and awkward linking within sentences occasionally disrupt the natural flow. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs could be smoother and more sophisticated. The progression of ideas is discernible, fitting the Band 6 descriptor where the overall arrangement is coherent, but cohesive devices can be repetitive or slightly inaccurate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'plethora of reasons', 'technological advancement', and 'sedentary lifestyle'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'facing a difficulties', 'within a age group', 'always stuck to their phones', and 'envirnment'. Words are sometimes misused grammatically, as seen in 'didn't getting enough sleep'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score. Because the student demonstrates an adequate range with some attempts at complex lexical items alongside persistent word-choice and spelling errors, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. Examples of complex structures include 'As per the survey in 2015, disclosed that...' and 'Arranging fun activities with family may provide balance...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and agreement issues like 'people rae not getting', 'sleep depends our daily activities', 'the one of the primary reason', 'didn't getting', and 'need to set'. Punctuation and article usage also need attention. While the meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded, the frequency of basic grammatical errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.5 a fair reflection of the writer's current control.
