In this modern era, some individuals don't get enough sleep. In this essay, I will discuss the reasons and solutions to tackle this problem.
One major reason is that most individuals have busy schedule because inflation is increasing day by day and they do long shifts to complete their basic needs which they have more workload and it increases stress. As a result, people suffer from a mental issues such as depression and anxiety and It will affect on their sleeping cycle. Another major reason is that people have more screen time because they watch movies to entertain themselves. For instance, young generation has addiction to watch reels on a Instagram due to this, they are not able to sleep on time. Social media is also impacts on their sleep.
However, there are various solutions to tackle this problem. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the problems caused by a lack of sleep (such as stress, depression, anxiety, and impaired concentration) and suggesting solutions (public awareness campaigns and managing screen time). However, the prompt actually asked about causes rather than problems in its first question ('What problems can lack of sleep cause?'), though the student misinterpreted this slightly by writing about reasons for sleep deprivation in the introduction and first body paragraph before transitioning into consequences and solutions. Despite this slight misinterpretation of the first bullet point, the ideas presented are relevant and generally supported with examples, such as mentioning screen time and social media addiction. The overall development is adequate, though some ideas remain slightly surface-level, placing this response at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, separating the causes/problems discussion from the solutions and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to link sentences and ideas, using phrases like 'One major reason', 'For instance', 'However', 'First and Foremost', and 'In conclusion'. However, some of these cohesive links are used mechanically or awkwardly, such as 'workers who have good sleep cycle. It will helps them...', which fragments the sentence structure and weakens logical flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the progression between sentences sometimes falters due to punctuation and grammatical errors, which restricts the score to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'inflation', 'workload', 'depression', 'anxiety', 'addiction', and 'campaigns'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are often accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'busy schedule' (instead of busy schedules), 'mental issues' (should be mental health issues or mental illness), and 'quality of time' (instead of quality time). Spelling is generally accurate, but awkward phrasing like 'due to this, they are not able to sleep on time' and 'Social media is also impacts on their sleep' reflects a limited lexical flexibility, justifying a Band 5.5 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinate clauses introduced by 'because', 'although', and 'that'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are numerous errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Social media is also impacts', 'it would be tackle'), missing articles ('have busy schedule', 'get proper diet'), and awkward fragments ('For instance, workers who have good sleep cycle. It will helps them...'). Punctuation errors also occur, such as comma splices and unnecessary capitalisation. While these errors do not completely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the writer from achieving a higher band, making Band 5.5 an accurate reflection of performance.
