Student answer (Band 6.0)

A segment of the population complains that they are not able to get the appropriate amount of sleep. A profound reason for this is late night screen use and bringinng the workload into the bedroom. However, this can be overcome by discilping the one's schedules and exercises.

To begin with, one of the prominent reasons for lack of sleep is that people tend to spend a lot of time on their smart phones after working all day, the flashing led's inhibit the levels of melatonin enzyme of the body that induces the sleep. Moreover, brain recieves the visual stimulation of short videos that is quite harmful. Furthermore, many people bring their office work to their bedroom, engaging in it for late nights and waking up early in morning, feeling inactive and exhausted during daytime. Another reason of not getting the enough sleep can be emotional instability.

These challenges can be managed by changing the schedule of one's dayt-ime and maintaining it consistently. People need to adapt to basic habits, like, avoid heavy meals after sun set, keeping the smartphones aside in night-time, to be able to shut down the mind while sleeping. One can turn off the lights 2 to 3 hours before bedtime and switch to dim lights as it helps naturally elevae melatonin levels in the body, promoting deeper rest.

To encapsulae, it is obvious that section of people stay deprived of proper sleep due to excessive screen time and some improper work schedules, however, they can enhance the sleep quality by mastering screen stimulus and fixing the circadian rhythm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the problems caused by a lack of sleep and potential solutions. The student explores issues such as the inhibition of melatonin from screen time, bringing work into the bedroom, and emotional instability. Solutions are also provided, including schedule discipline, avoiding heavy meals, and reducing screen exposure before bedtime. Ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, although some aspects could be extended further. The position is clear throughout the text, meeting the requirements of Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given that all parts are addressed with clear supporting ideas, a band score of 6.5 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs addressing problems and solutions, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader through the text. However, some referencing is slightly awkward, and certain transitions feel mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, and there is a clear logical flow from causes to management strategies. These features align well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'melatonin enzyme', 'visual stimulation', and 'circadian rhythm'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'bringinng', 'discilping', 'dayt-ime', and 'elevae'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating an attempt to use varied grammatical forms. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'discilping the one's schedules', 'brain recieves the visual stimulation', and 'avoid heavy meals after sun set'. Punctuation errors also appear, such as unnecessary commas splitting clauses. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication. This corresponds closely to the descriptors for Band 6.0.
