Student answer (Band 6.5)

A segment of population complain that they are not able to get the appropriate amount of sleep. A profound reason for this is late night screen use and bringing the workload into bedroom. However, ths can be overcome by disciplining one's schedules and doing exercises.

To begin with, one of the prominent reasons for lack of the sleep is that people tend to spend a lot of time on their smartphones after working all day, The flashing LEDs are always inhibiting the melatonin enzyme of the body that induces sleep. Moreover, the brain recieve the visual stimulation of short videos which is quite harmful. Furthermore, many people bring their office work to their bedroom, engaging in it for latenight and waking up early in morning, feeling inactive and exhausted for during daytime. Another reason for not getting enough sleep can be emotional instability

All this can be managed by changing the schedule of one's daytime and following it consistently. People need to adapt to basic habits, like, avoid eating heavy after sunset, keeping the smartphones aside st night-time, to be able to shut down the mind while sleeping. One can turn off the lights 2 to 3 hours before bedtime and switch to dim lights as it helps naturally elevate the melatonin levels in the body.

To encapsulate, it is obvious that a section of people stay deprived of proper sleep due to excessive screen time and some improper work schedules, however, they can enhance their sleep quality by mastering screen stimulus and fixing the circadian rhythm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the problems caused by a lack of sleep and the solutions. The writer presents clear ideas, noting that sleep deprivation leads to exhaustion, emotional instability, and daytime inactivity due to factors like screen time and work habits. These ideas are extended with relevant explanations, such as the inhibition of the melatonin enzyme by flashing LEDs. While the introduction briefly mentions causes rather than focusing exclusively on the prompt requirements, the overall discussion thoroughly covers problems and solutions. The position is clear throughout, and the main points are supported with sensible examples from modern life. This aligns well with the requirements for a Band 7 performance, as all parts of the prompt are addressed with sufficient extension and support.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, moving from an introduction to causes, solutions, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the text, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'To encapsulate'. However, there are minor issues with paragraph progression and mechanical transitions. For instance, the transition from the first paragraph into the body paragraphs feels slightly abrupt, and referencing is occasionally clunky, as seen in 'ths can be overcome'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, maintaining a clear overall structure throughout the piece. These characteristics correspond directly to the descriptors for a Band 6.5 or a solid Band 7, where logical organization and progression are evident despite minor flaws in cohesion management.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'melatonin enzyme', 'visual stimulation', 'emotional instability', and 'circadian rhythm'. There are, however, some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'segment of population' instead of 'a segment of the population', 'latenight' as one word, and 'avoid eating heavy' instead of 'eating heavily'. Spelling is mostly accurate, though minor slips occur, like 'recieve'. The lexical resource is sufficient to convey meaning with some precision, but the occasional errors place it securely within the Band 6 descriptor range, as the vocabulary is adequate for the task despite noticeable lapses in collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures such as 'People need to adapt to basic habits, like, avoid eating heavy...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including missing articles ('lack of the sleep'), spelling slips ('ths'), incorrect verb forms ('the brain recieve'), and awkward phrasing ('for during daytime'). There is also a punctuation error involving a comma splice before 'to be able to shut down'. Although these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a Band 7. The profile fits the Band 6 descriptor, where a mix of structures is used alongside noticeable errors that rarely impede understanding.
