Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing causes and potential solutions for lack of sleep, incorporating a brief example regarding people in the UK. However, the introduction confuses causes with problems, stating that the main problem causes are fast pace life and busy schedule, which creates some initial confusion. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains only 211 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum. This under-length impacts the overall development of ideas, leaving certain points underdeveloped and restricting the depth of explanation. Consequently, the task response is partially limited by the word count deficit, matching the criteria for a band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing basic organisational structure. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the causes of sleep deprivation from the solutions. However, logical progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and faulty cohesive devices. For instance, the transition 'Moreover, working 24/7, making seem like a waste of time' is ungrammatical and fails to connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. Referencing and conjunctions are basic or sometimes inaccurate, leading to a mechanical feel. While the overarching structure is visible, the limitations in cohesion place this at a band 5 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'viable solutions', 'demanding schedule', and 'relaxation exercises', but encounters frequent errors in word choice and collocation. Examples include 'people are indulge' instead of 'people are indulged' or 'indulging', and 'sleeping problem' rather than 'sleep problems'. There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'fast pace life'. The range of vocabulary is adequate for expressing simple ideas about lifestyle and sleep, but inaccuracies in form and collocation restrict precision, aligning the lexical resource with a band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, such as relative clauses ('those are associated to their workplace') and infinitive clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the text. There are numerous errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('The main problem this causes are...'), incorrect prepositions ('associated to' instead of 'associated with'), and missing verbs or awkward nominalisations ('making seem like a waste of time'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent grammatical errors across sentence structures cause occasional difficulty for the reader, placing this performance at a band 5.
