Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, insufficient sleep is becoming a common factor among people, as it is caused by many reasons, which I will discuss in the forthcoming paragraphs along with its solutions.

To start with its reasons, there are myriads of reasons behind sleep difficulties. Masses complained about this problem every day and every time. Firstly, mental health issues as this is the most common cause of this problem. People are not able to balance their work and personal lives, which leaves severe stress in their brains. Their ability to cope with this problem is decreasing day by day due to being tired of managing it. Therefore, their tolerance, patience and peace start to lead to their lack of sleep. Secondly, digital transformation life, individuals socialize less compared to the past. They always remain active on social media or use devices to be in contact with their close relatives or friends late at night (24*7), which results in leaving them isolated or introverted. This is why this dependency on digital devices in terms of communication, socialization, or time utilization affects their sleep pattern gradually.

There are numerous solutions to these problems. The first and foremost one is Government should enforce a law providing 2 days off a week and limit working hours to no more than 40 hours. Canada is the best example of this, so that people can manage their schedule to balance both personal and professional life. Finally, Individuals should avoid using mobile phones late at night, as this extremely disrupts people's sleep. They should spend some time with their family instead that may improve their mental well-being.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it discusses the problems caused by lack of sleep, such as mental health issues and social isolation, and suggests solutions, including government policy on working hours and reducing late-night mobile phone usage. However, the introduction introduces a misunderstanding by stating the prompt asks for the reasons behind sleep deprivation rather than the problems it causes, which slightly detracts from the initial focus. Ideas are generally relevant, but the development is somewhat limited and repetitive in places, particularly in the discussion of stress and digital device usage. While the position is clear, the depth of extension places this response comfortably at Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged coherently with a clear overall structure, utilizing paragraphing to separate reasons and solutions. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'The first and foremost one', although some transitions are mechanical or awkward, such as 'To start with its reasons'. Referencing is generally clear, but the concluding sentence is incomplete and abrupt ('Although there are various reasons of insufficient sleep problem among people, but there are also some solutions this problem'), which disrupts the logical flow at the end of the text. Overall progression is present, supporting a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'myriads', 'digital transformation life', and 'isolated or introverted'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'Masses complained about this problem' and 'digital transformation life'. Word formation errors also occur, such as 'solutions this problem' in the final fragment. Despite these slips, communication is rarely impeded, allowing for a score of 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambitious structures like 'People are not able to balance their work and personal lives, which leaves severe stress in their brains.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward clause structures throughout, such as 'as this is the most common cause of this problem' and the incomplete concluding sentence. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies occasionally require the reader to reread sections. The control of grammar aligns with the Band 6 descriptors.
