Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, the issue of getting insufficient sleep has become a matter of considerable concern. This essay will discuss the main problems associated with lack of sleep, such as stress, anxiety, and fatigue, and propose several solutions.

One of the major problems caused by sleep deprivation is poor mental well-being. People who do not get enough sleep tend to have difficulty concentrating and may struggle to perform their daily tasks effectively, which can result in mistakes and increased stress. For example, employees who regularly experience poor sleep may make more mistakes at work because they are unable to concentrate properly. Another significant problem is physical fatigue, as people who do not sleep sufficiently may lack the energy to exercise or participate in physical activities. Consequently, persistent fatigue can negatively affect people's productivity and quality of life.

There are several practical ways to address the problem of sleep deprivation. Firstly, individuals should maintain a consistent sleep schedule and make regular exercise part of their daily routine. Getting sufficient sleep can improve concentration, energy levels, and productivity, while physical activity can reduce stress and support mental well-being. For example, people who go to bed and wake up at similar times each day are more likely to establish a healthy sleeping pattern. Secondly, governments and communities should launch awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of adequate sleep and the consequences of sleep deprivation. This could encourage people to make healthier lifestyle choices and give greater priority to their sleep.

In conclusion, although the issue of sleep deprivation is becoming more serious, several effection solution exists. If these measures are adopted, the sitution is likely to improve significantly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the problems caused by a lack of sleep, such as poor mental well-being, reduced concentration, and physical fatigue. It also offers logical solutions, including maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and launching public awareness campaigns. The student maintains a clear position throughout the essay. The ideas are well extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the mention of employees making mistakes at work due to tiredness. The task is successfully completed without any major omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to problems, solutions, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, as seen with transition phrases like 'One of the major problems', 'Another significant problem', and 'Firstly'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the structure supports the overall argument. Referencing is generally clear and easy to follow, contributing to the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for the task. Less common lexical items such as 'sleep deprivation', 'persistent fatigue', and 'awareness campaigns' are used with some awareness of style and collocation. However, there are minor lexical and spelling slips towards the end of the text, specifically 'effection solution exists' instead of 'effective solutions exist' and 'sitution' instead of 'situation'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating control over grammatical forms. Examples such as 'People who do not get enough sleep tend to have difficulty concentrating...' showcase effective use of relative clauses and subordination. Punctuation is generally accurate. While there are a few minor errors near the conclusion, such as subject-verb agreement in 'effection solution exists', the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and communication is never impeded by these occasional slips.
