Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying both the problems associated with lack of sleep and the potential solutions. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. In the body paragraphs, the student discusses several relevant problems, such as stress, poor sleeping habits, and health issues. However, the prompt asks 'What problems can lack of sleep cause?', which implies the negative consequences of sleep deprivation (e.g., poor cognitive function, weakened immunity, mood disturbances). The student instead largely discusses the *causes* of sleep deprivation in the body paragraphs rather than the *problems* caused by a lack of sleep. Although solutions are adequately covered, this misinterpretation of the first part of the prompt prevents the task achievement score from reaching a higher band. Ideas are presented and supported, but development is somewhat limited due to this conceptual misunderstanding of the prompt's first question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into an introduction, distinct body paragraphs for problems and solutions, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised sufficiently to separate main ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences and clauses, such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from this'. However, some mechanical errors occur in cohesive referencing and linking, such as 'for instant' instead of 'for instance', and the incomplete final sentence at the end of the text ('Helping awarness about sleeping issues helps in reducing this problem to a...'). Despite these minor flaws and the abrupt ending, the arrangement remains generally coherent, and the reader can easily follow the progression of the writer's thoughts.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts to incorporate less common lexical items such as 'proactive measures', 'critical illnesses', and 'stressed nerves'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'stess level' instead of 'stress level', 'metal strength' instead of 'mental strength', 'proffessionals' with an extra letter, and 'awarness' instead of 'awareness'. These inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary from achieving a higher rating. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the writer's basic message, though it occasionally lacks precision and variety.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'It is a fact that nowadays people have significantly higher work load than past and they do not have enough time for their families.' There are, however, frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing articles ('than past' instead of 'than in the past', 'suggested by doctor' instead of 'suggested by a doctor'), incorrect prepositional usage, and slight syntactical awkwardness ('Maintaining sleep schedule helps sleeping more easily'). Furthermore, the final sentence is incomplete, breaking off abruptly. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication.
