Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the problems associated with a lack of sleep, such as stress and physical fatigue, and suggesting solutions like exercise and diet adjustments. However, your ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, when you mention that you came to Canada as an international student and work part-time, you touch upon a relevant personal example, but you do not fully explore the broader societal problems caused by sleep deprivation. To reach a higher level, you need to extend your ideas further with deeper explanations and more fully developed supporting arguments rather than relying on brief, generalized statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure your ideas into logical paragraphs, separating the introduction, causes, solutions, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in your argument. Nevertheless, your cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing can be unclear, such as in the second paragraph where multiple ideas about finances, stress, and your personal experience are run together without smooth transitions. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme and that your sentences flow naturally from one to the next with more precise referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You demonstrate a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using common terms related to daily life, study, and health, such as 'schedule', 'finances', and 'exercise'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations that cause some difficulty, such as 'prices of all things reaching the sky' instead of the cost of living rising, and 'doing double work' instead of working multiple jobs. You also make frequent spelling and word-form errors, like 'nowdays', 'mintues', and 'streesed out'. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items and pay closer attention to natural word partnerships and accurate spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your writing uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but your control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. You attempt complex structures, but your sentences frequently contain errors, such as comma splices ('...everybody is doing double work.Another reason...'), missing articles, and subject-verb agreement issues like 'their are solutions' instead of 'there are solutions'. Furthermore, prepositional errors appear, such as 'came canada to as an international student'. To move up to the next band, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences, use punctuation more accurately, and demonstrate better control over complex grammatical structures.
