Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the problems associated with a lack of sleep and the potential solutions. The position is clear throughout the essay. The ideas presented are relevant, but some are more fully developed than others, which places the content aspect right on the threshold of the next band. For example, while the problem of poor concentration and the solution regarding caffeine intake are well integrated and supported, the discussion surrounding employers providing reasonable working hours could be extended further with more specific examples. Overall, the content covers the required elements adequately, satisfying the expectations for a balanced response that touches upon personal habits, daily impacts, and broader structural solutions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function, such as introducing the topic, addressing problems, suggesting solutions, and concluding. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, featuring transitions such as 'One major problem', 'Besides this', and 'To begin with'. However, there are minor instances where referencing or cohesive ties feel slightly mechanical, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the information flows logically from one point to the next, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of ideas regarding the causes, effects, and remedies of sleep deprivation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms such as 'contemporary world', 'lifestyle', 'productivity', 'caffeinated drinks', and 'screen time'. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'to do more mistakes' (instead of 'to make more mistakes') and 'thie sleep' (typographical/spelling error for 'their sleep'). Despite these occasional lapses, the vocabulary remains sufficient for the communication of ideas and does not impede the reader's understanding, reflecting a solid, competent control of everyday and semi-formal lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard grammatical patterns. Examples of complex structures include conditional or relative clauses such as 'Many people who do not sleep well feel tired' and 'employers can also help by providing reasonable working hours so that their employees have enough time'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as 'people who do not get enough sleep last night can not focus' (tense inconsistency) and 'Avoid using phone make people' (subject-verb agreement and gerund form). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the core arguments without difficulty.
