Student answer (Band 6.5)

Sleeping on time is becoming a major issue in many individuals' life. A large number of people complain about problems in getting enough sleep such as stress, heavy workload and so on. I believe this is an important issue which requires urgent attention as well as effective solutions; otherwise it can lead to many more problems.

I feel that getting enough sleep is very essential for a person otherwise it can be a cause of serious health problems. By not achieving enough hours of sleep, a person's health can be utterly affected. When a person is not able to get enough sleep it can cause him/her to be restless paving a path for them to take sleep medication which is very harmful in the long run by being a way for health problems such as Insomnia. Additionally, lack of sleep can cause disturbance in the family life, not only does lack of sleep affect the person but also their family life. The more a person will be restless the more he/she will avoid to take part in the family activities as well as getting irritated over the small things which is the main cause of rise in the numbers of divorce in this generation.

This issue should not be ignored and there is a need of implementation of effective measures to overcome this issue such as straight working hours and education. Policies such as regular working hours are needed to be introduced to help the employees in their personal lives which will result in resolving these hurdles as well as more productivity in their work. Additionally, the government should run programmes in order to educate people that how important is the sleep for human body. For example- organising a webinar on sleep schedule which will for sure reduce the number of people who do not sleep on time and keeps on scrolling social sites.

In conclusion, although lack of sleep is a very common issue due to various reasons, I wholeheartedly hold the view that it is absolutely possible to overcome this problem with education and good policies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this band level. For instance, the exploration of health problems is somewhat repetitive, linking lack of sleep directly to restlessness and insomnia without detailing broader physical or psychological impacts. On the other hand, the proposed solutions involving straight working hours and educational programmes are relevant and extended. To move to a higher band, the writer would need to fully develop every main idea with deeper analysis or more precise real-world examples rather than briefly mentioning points like family life and rising divorce rates.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, presenting an overall coherent arrangement. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs handling the problems and solutions respectively, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'Additionally' and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or faulty, as seen in phrases like 'the more a person will be restless the more he/she will avoid'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the flow of the writing. To reach the next level, the writer should ensure that referencing remains crystal clear and cohesive relationships are managed with greater subtlety and flexibility.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating central ideas. There are clear attempts to use less common items and phrasing, such as 'urgent attention', 'utterly affected', and 'straight working hours'. However, some word choice and collocation inaccuracies occur, such as 'Sleeping on time' instead of 'Getting to sleep on time' or 'Maintaining a sleep schedule', and 'avoid to take part' instead of 'avoid taking part'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor lexical slips do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary and demonstrate more precise control over less common lexical items, collocations, and idiomatic phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and multi-clause sentences, such as 'Policies such as regular working hours are needed to be introduced to help the employees in their personal lives which will result in resolving these hurdles'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including preposition usage and awkward verb patterns like 'educate people that how important is the sleep'. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To attain a higher band, the writer must produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of complex structures with tighter control over articles, prepositions, and clausal integration.
