Student answer (Band 6.5)

Sleeping on time is becoming a major issue in many individuals' lives. A large number of people complain about the problems in getting enough sleep such as stress, heavy workload and so on. I believe this is an important issue which requires urgent attention as well as effective solutions; otherwise it can lead to many more problems.

I feel that getting enough sleep is very essential for a person otherwise it can be a cause of serious health problems. By not achieving enough hours of sleep, a person's health can be utterly affected. When a person is not able to get enough sleep it can cause him/her to be restless paving a path for them to take sleep medication which is very harmful in the long run by being a way for health problems such as insomnia. Additionally, lack of sleep can cause disturbance in the family life, not only does lack of sleep affect the person but also their family life. The more a person will be restless the more he/she will avoid to take part in the family activities and will get irritated over the small things which is the main cause of rise in the number of divorces in this generation.

This issue should not be ignored and there is a need for implementation of effective measures to overcome this issue such as common working hours and education. Policies such as regular working hours are needed to be introduced to help the employees in their personal lives which will result in resolving these hurdles as well as more productivity in their work. Additionally, the government should run programmes in order to educate people that how important is the sleep for human body. For example- organising a webinar on sleep schedules which will for sure reduce the number of people who do not sleep on time and keeps on scrolling social sites.

In conclusion, although lack of sleep is a very common issue due to various reasons, I wholeheartedly hold the view that it is absolutely possible to overcome this problem with education and good policies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the problems caused by a lack of sleep and proposing effective solutions. Your position is clear throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which places your task response at this level. For instance, while you explain health consequences like insomnia and family friction leading to divorces, some points feel slightly repetitive, stating that a lack of sleep makes people restless. To reach the next level, you need to fully develop all parts of your response with deeper elaboration and richer examples rather than over-generalising certain points, ensuring every main idea is thoroughly explored from multiple angles.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You have structured the response well with an introduction, distinct body paragraphs focusing separately on problems and solutions, and a clear conclusion. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Additionally' and 'In conclusion', to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, as each main theme is housed in its own paragraph. To achieve an even higher band, you could work on making your referencing and transitions even more seamless and less mechanical, ensuring that every sentence flows naturally into the next without relying on predictable signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'productivity', 'hurdles', and 'webinar'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing 'problems in getting enough sleep' instead of 'trouble getting enough sleep', and 'avoid to take part' instead of 'avoid taking part'. Spelling is generally acceptable and communication is not impeded by your lexical errors. To move up to a higher band, you need to demonstrate a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary, using more sophisticated academic collocations and less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your essay, using structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('how important is the sleep'), awkward phrasing ('is needed to be introduced'), and punctuation slips like using a hyphen instead of a comma or full stop in 'For example- organising'. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To reach the next band, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free sentences when using complex grammatical structures, and refine your control over articles, infinitive forms, and prepositional patterns.
