Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the task by identifying causes of sleep deprivation, such as family and work stress and excessive use of technology, as well as outlining associated problems like illness and poor job performance, alongside potential solutions. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, lacking sufficient explanation or detailed examples. Furthermore, the response falls short of the word count requirement, reaching only 233 words instead of the minimum 250 words. To move up, the writer needs to expand fully on each point with relevant support and ensure the minimum length requirement is met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization evident in the division of the response into introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs, and the writer attempts to sequence ideas using transitional markers such as 'First', 'Second thing', and 'Therefore'. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and cohesive devices are frequently repetitive, inaccurate, or inadequate. For instance, referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in phrases like 'My course about this problem', which fails to connect logically to the surrounding context. Paragraphing is also somewhat erratic, with incomplete thoughts at the end of the text. To improve, the writer must ensure a smoother logical flow between sentences and use a wider, more accurate variety of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for discussing the topic of sleep deprivation. The writer attempts some less common expressions, but these are marred by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'heared' instead of heard, 'incounter' instead of encounter, 'technolony', and 'habbits'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication at times. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to build a broader vocabulary range, use words with greater precision regarding collocation and register, and eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic patterns. When the writer attempts more complex structures, they are often faulty, featuring frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('It cause people consume'), incorrect prepositions ('affect to your everyday routine'), and awkward phrasing ('you will having good times'). These frequent grammatical errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To progress, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of sentence structures with greater accuracy, focusing particularly on verb forms, tenses, and correct prepositions.
