Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially, fulfilling the requirement to discuss both the problems and solutions of lack of sleep, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions issues like feeling tired all day and dark circles, these points are stated briefly without elaboration or relevant examples from personal experience. Furthermore, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement, falling short of the required two hundred and fifty words, which impacts the overall development of the task. To reach a higher band, the writer must extend and support each main idea with clear explanations and specific examples while meeting the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some organisation in the essay, as the writer attempts to divide the response into introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are basic, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' without proper balance or connection. Paragraphing is also erratic, with sentences grouped together rather than following a logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that sentences within paragraphs are logically linked using a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices and maintain a clear, structured progression from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are frequent issues with word formation, word choice, and spelling, such as writing 'incresing' instead of 'increasing', 'chaseing' instead of 'chasing', 'streesed' instead of 'stressed', and 'employe' instead of employees. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'modern-era' and 'social media', inaccuracies persist throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range, use words with greater precision regarding collocation, and check spelling carefully to ensure clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer uses a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, and attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles that can cause difficulty for the reader, such as missing subject-verb agreement in 'boss of workplace dont pressure o their employe', incorrect punctuation around capitalization and spacing, and fragment sentences like 'Which is totelly effecting employe sleeping cycle.' To improve, the writer should practice using a wider variety of complex sentence forms with accurate grammatical control, paying close attention to verb tenses, articles, and sentence boundaries.
