Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the problems associated with a lack of sleep and effective solutions. The main ideas are generally relevant, presenting physical and mental health issues alongside practical countermeasures like lifestyle changes and workplace support. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full clarity. For instance, the mention of specific medical conditions such as 'dipression, PCOD, PCOS' in the second paragraph is merely listed without explanation or direct linkage to the argument. Similarly, the reference to the younger generation and smartphones lacks depth. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully extend and support all supporting points with more coherent examples and explanation, rather than relying on brief or overly generalised statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs addressing problems and solutions respectively, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct topics, which aids the reader in following the progression of ideas. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. The use of cohesive devices can feel repetitive or slightly unnatural, such as the transition 'In addition to physical effects' followed by minor referencing slips where pronouns lack clear antecedents. Furthermore, the internal flow within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by abrupt topic shifts, particularly in the third paragraph when moving from mental health to the example of a younger sibling. To achieve a stronger score, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts relating to health, lifestyle, and work. There are clear attempts to use less common lexical items, such as 'sleep deprivation', 'work-life balance', and 'bedtime routine'. However, the vocabulary is marred by noticeable spelling errors, such as 'raeson', 'dipression', 'insuffecient', and 'recuce', as well as word-choice and word-form inaccuracies like 'insufficient energy' where a noun or adverbial phrasing might fit better, and 'electronic use of devices'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. Incorporating more precise vocabulary choices and eliminating spelling mistakes would elevate this aspect of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures through conditional and multi-clause sentences. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause some difficulty for the reader. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors ('this raeson increasing', 'companies offers', 'this issues can'), awkward phrasing and prepositional usage ('feel tired and insufficient energy', 'difficulties into concentrate', 'effect on their routine tasks'), and redundant auxiliary verbs ('should should follow'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent across the text. To progress to a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over complex grammatical patterns, verb tenses, and article usage.
