Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the prompt only minimally, which is compounded by the fact that the length requirement is not met, falling significantly short of the 250-word minimum. While the writer attempts to identify both problems associated with a lack of sleep (such as stress, weak health, and mobile-related issues) and solutions (such as 'leave stress and care them self'), these ideas are extremely limited and under-developed. The examples provided, such as mentioning men who use their mobiles and get headaches, are basic and lack sufficient elaboration. To move to a higher level, the response must meet the minimum word count and extend all parts of the prompt with fully developed ideas and relevant, well-supported examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The arrangement of information and ideas lacks overall coherence and clear progression. While the writer attempts to divide thoughts into short sections, paragraphing is not used effectively, resulting in a disjointed structure. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, and at times inaccurate, such as using 'In other words' to introduce a completely new point about phones rather than restating a previous one. Referencing is also confusing in places, making it hard to follow the flow of arguments. To improve, the writer needs to logically sequence ideas, ensure clear progression throughout the text, and use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices alongside proper paragraphing.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used throughout the essay is very basic and repetitive, severely constraining the range of expression. The writer relies heavily on simple words and makes noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as writing 'lake of sleep' instead of 'lack of sleep', 'block blued sels' instead of 'blocked blood vessels', and 'care them self' instead of 'take care of themselves'. These lexical inaccuracies and limitations strain the reader and frequently obscure the intended meaning. Achieving a higher band requires a much wider and more precise range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items, used accurately in appropriate collocations without basic spelling or word-choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences alongside frequent faulty attempts at complex forms. Errors in grammar and punctuation are very frequent and often distort the intended meaning. Examples of grammatical issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'people who is in stress', awkward phrasing such as 'They are not get sleep well' and 'who are not get sleep well', and incorrect prepositions and verb forms. These persistent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must demonstrate control over a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with significantly reduced error frequency, particularly regarding verb tenses, articles, and clause structures.
