Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the problems caused by a lack of sleep and proposing actionable solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the causes and health consequences—such as cardiovascular disease and anxiety—are clearly identified and supported with relevant examples, the solutions are slightly less fully developed. For instance, the suggestion that 'a regular ten minutes of exercise or meditation is the key to mitigate the stress' is introduced effectively, but the subsequent elaboration on governmental roles and public awareness campaigns tends to over-generalize and remains somewhat basic. To reach a higher level, all parts of the prompt would need more extended and thorough elaboration, with fully realized supporting arguments and examples for every main point presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introducing the topic, to examining the causes and health effects, moving on to solutions, and concluding with a summary of the main points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thematic blocks. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly in the transitions between sentences and paragraphs, such as the frequent reliance on standard transition markers like 'Secondly' and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional clunky transitional phrases hinder a completely smooth and natural flow. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to employ more varied and flexible cohesive devices that integrate ideas more seamlessly without drawing attention to themselves.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'sleep deprivation', 'cardiovascular disease', 'metabolic rates', and 'curtailed'. There are, however, some noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies that prevent a higher rating, such as writing 'thesedays' instead of 'these days', and stating that 'Employment pressure is one of the main reason generation is facing difficulty', which contains a minor grammatical-lexical slip in pluralization and missing articles. Despite these occasional flaws in collocation and word form, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the central ideas clearly. To improve further, the writer should refine precision in word choice and eliminate basic spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at complex structures such as conditional and participial clauses, for example, in sentences starting with 'Consequently, working long hours...' and 'To combat this problem...'. There are, however, some persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement and article usage issues, such as 'a person take at least 8 hours of sleep', 'an individuals responsibility', and 'producing a chronic diseases'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without significant strain. To reach the next tier, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex grammatical patterns, ensuring that prepositional usage, verb forms, and articles are consistently accurate in more ambitious sentences.
