Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the problems caused by lack of sleep and potential solutions. However, some ideas are under-developed or presented in a limited fashion, such as the brief and simplistic suggestions provided in the final paragraph. Furthermore, the response falls significantly short of the minimum word count requirement, containing only 189 words rather than the required 250. This lack of extended development prevents a more thorough exploration of the prompts and restricts the overall achievement of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical flow from causes to solutions, demonstrating a solid foundation of the middle band requirements. Paragraphing is used to separate main ideas, and cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Consequently', 'For instance', and 'To combat this problem'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly repetitive, and the transitions between ideas lack the smoother, more sophisticated progression characteristic of a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'cardiovascular disease', 'hypertension', and 'metabolic rates'. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice errors, notably 'thesedays' instead of 'these days', 'insomia' instead of 'insomnia', and the misuse of 'reason' instead of 'reasons'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in lexical control that keep the score at the present level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as 'Employment pressure is one of the main reason...' and 'It is crucial that a person take...'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('one of the main reason... generation is'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrasing ('an every day ten minutes of exercise'). Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and represent typical patterns of the middle band.
