Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many people struggle to get enough sleep because of their lifestyles and daily responsibilities. Lack of sleep can affect negatively on both people's health and their performance at work or school. However, this problem can be reduced by developing healthy sleeping habits and stress management

One main problem caused by insufficient sleep is poor concentration and reduce productivity. This is because tired people often finds it difficult to focus, remember information or making good decisions. As a result, they may make mistakes at job or perform poor in their studies. For example, a student who stays awake till late night everyday may struggle to concentrate during class and achieve lower score in examination. Furthermore, a lack of sleep for long period of time can cause sever health problems and affect people's mood making them more stressed and irritated in their daily routine.

There are several ways to address this problem. People should develop sleeping schedule by going bed on exact time and waking up at the same time every single day. They should avoid drinking coffee late in the evening and limit their mobile phone usage before bedtime. Secondly employer should encourage to maintain well balance between work and life by providing reasonable working hours and manageable workload. This would allow employees to spend their time to relax instead of working till late night. If a person is still not able to sleep they should consult a doctor.

In conclusion, having not enough sleep can cause a lack of concentration and other sever health conditions. To resolve this a person need to follow a strict sleeping schedule and maintain work-life balance, if needed seek a doctor for medical assistance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the question and maintains a clear focus: it identifies effects on concentration, productivity, health and mood, then proposes sleep routines, reduced evening caffeine and phone use, workplace changes, and medical advice. The student example about a tired student helps illustrate the impact, while the conclusion restates the main points. This is a well-targeted response with relevant support. Some ideas, however, are asserted rather than fully explained: the long-term health effects are not specified, and the suggestions about workplace support and consulting a doctor receive little detail about when or how they would help. Developing these points with a concrete explanation or example would make the response more fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to problems, solutions and a conclusion. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “One main problem,” “Furthermore,” “There are several ways,” and “In conclusion” make the stages easy to follow. The example is placed appropriately within the discussion of concentration. Some connections are less smooth: the shift from individual sleep habits to employers’ responsibilities could be linked more explicitly, and the final sentence combines several recommendations without clearly showing their relationship. A few transitions also feel formulaic. Use linking phrases that express the precise relationship between ideas, and make references such as “this problem” or “this” more specific where needed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing sleep and its consequences, with relevant expressions such as “insufficient sleep,” “poor concentration,” “manageable workload,” and “medical assistance.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the writer attempts some topic-specific phrasing. However, several word-choice, collocation and word-form errors reduce naturalness: “affect negatively on,” “perform poor,” “sever health problems,” and “well balance” are not accurate forms. Repetition of “sleep,” “problem” and “people” also limits flexibility. Build a more precise range of common collocations and check spelling and word forms; for example, use “negatively affect,” “perform poorly,” “severe health problems,” and “a healthy work-life balance.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses (“This is because…”) and conditional structures (“If a person is still not able to sleep…”). Meaning remains clear throughout, but some grammatical errors occur. Examples include “tired people often finds” instead of “find,” “by going bed” instead of “by going to bed,” and “a person need” instead of “a person needs.” The sentence beginning “Furthermore” also needs clearer punctuation or restructuring because several ideas are joined together. Review subject–verb agreement, infinitive and gerund patterns, articles, and sentence boundaries. More consistent accuracy in these areas, alongside the existing range of structures, would strengthen the writing.
