Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the fast-paced world today, most individuals are sleep deprived due to the hectic work schedule and excessive screen time. This essay will explore the various problems that can result from sleep deprivation and offer possible solutions that can help improve their sleeping habits.

The primary problem people could face due to lack of sleep is its negative impact on the physical and mental well being. Insufficient sleep can lead to chronic sleep deprivation which can result to chronic diseases. Moreover lack of sleep can also have an adverse impact on productivity and cognitive function. For example many recent studies have revealed that individuals who do not get enough sleep are not only at risk of illnesses like heart disease and obesity but also struggle with concentration in their day-to-day day activities.

To mitigate the risks associated with sleep deprivation certain practical measures need to be put in place. Smartphones, television, and other digital devices emits blue light. This light is similar to the rays of light from the sun which signals to human body that it is daytime and causes the body to keep awake. Reduction of exposure to screentime especially at night will help improve the sleeping pattern and enhance better sleep quality. Another solution is to engage in physical exercises. Nowadays people tend to live a sedentary lifestyle. Inability to exercise the body can result to chronic sleep deprivation. Daily physical exercise will help people to sleep better and achieve physical fitness.

In conclusion , Insufficient sleep can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health performance by increasing the risk of various health problems and reducing productivity. However, adopting a healthy lifestyle like daily physical exercise and reduction of screen time can significantly improve sleep quality.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the question and maintains a clear focus: it identifies health and cognitive/productivity consequences, then proposes reducing evening screen exposure and exercising. The example linking insufficient sleep with heart disease, obesity and difficulty concentrating supports the discussion, while the explanation of blue light gives one solution a relevant rationale. This fits the descriptor because the main ideas are extended and supported. To strengthen the response further, develop the causes and effects with more precise explanation rather than broad claims: for instance, clarify how sleep loss affects mental well-being, and explain more directly how a sedentary lifestyle contributes to poor sleep. The conclusion effectively restates the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to problems, solutions and a conclusion. Progression within the body paragraphs is generally logical: the first develops health and concentration effects, while the second presents two practical measures and explains the screen-light link. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “For example,” and “To mitigate” help guide the reader, and the conclusion returns to the central points. Cohesion is flexible overall, though some linking is formulaic and a few references could be clearer. For example, “This essay will explore” is a predictable signpost, and “This light” could be tied more explicitly to the devices’ blue light. Varying transitions and using clearer references would make the flow more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The response uses a sufficient range of topic-related vocabulary, including “sleep deprivation,” “cognitive function,” “sedentary lifestyle,” “exposure,” and “sleep quality.” These choices allow the writer to discuss both health consequences and possible interventions with some precision. There are occasional awkward or inaccurate expressions, however, such as “result to chronic diseases,” “day-to-day day activities,” and “enhance better sleep quality.” “Physical and mental well being” is also less natural than the standard compound form “well-being.” Aim for accurate collocations and avoid unnecessary repetition: “lack of sleep” and “sleep deprivation” recur frequently. More precise phrasing would improve flexibility and naturalness while preserving the clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “individuals who do not get enough sleep” and a conditional-style explanation of how blue light signals daytime. Many sentences are clear, and the meaning remains easy to follow. Some grammatical errors persist, which limits the accuracy of this range. Examples include “devices emits” instead of “devices emit,” “result to” instead of “result in,” and missing articles in “signals to human body” and “keep awake.” There are also punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as the comma spacing and capitalised “Insufficient” after the introductory comma in the conclusion. Proofread for subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence punctuation; these corrections would make the complex sentences more controlled.
