Nowadays many people complain that they have difficulties getting enough sleep. What problems can lack of sleep cause? What can be done about lack of sleep?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Many people struggle to get sufficient sleep, largely because of demanding lifestyles, long working hours, and excessive use of digital devices. This lack of sleep can have serious consequences for both physcial and mental well-being. However, individuals can adopt healthier sleeping habits, while employers and governments can contribute to encourage a better balance between work and rest.
One of the most significant problem associated with insufficient sleep is its negative impact on people's physcial and mental health. When individuals regularly fail to catch enough sleep, they may experience fatigue, difficulty concerntrating and reduce productivity during the day. In long term, chronic sleep deprivation may lead to various heath problem and weaken the body's ability to function efficiently. For example, a person who regularly sleep only for a few hours may struggle to concerntrate at work, make poor decisions and become increasingly rely on caffeine to remain alert. Therefore, a persistent lack of sleep can negatively affect both quality of life and their performance at work.
There are several measures that could help to address this problem. At individual level, people should establish consistent sleeping routines and reduce activities that interfere with sleep, particularly doomscrolling late at night. Creating a relaxing environment and avoiding stimulants such as caffeine before bedtime may also improve sleep quality. At broader level, employers should encourage employees to maintain healthy work-life balance by regulating working hours. For instance, companies could discourage employees from responding to work related messages or calls post working hours, allowing them to properly disconnect from their work.
In conclusion, insufficient sleep can result in fatigue, poor concerntration, and serious long term health problems. People should practice establishing sleeping routines and focus on building heathy habits that helps in improving overall quality of sleep.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt and maintains a clear focus: it explains effects such as fatigue, difficulty concentrating, reduced productivity and possible long-term health problems, then offers individual and workplace measures. The example of a worker relying on caffeine helps illustrate the consequences, while the suggestions about routines, stimulants and after-hours messages are relevant. This fits a response that covers the task and supports its main ideas. However, some points remain general: the health problems are not specified, and the role of governments mentioned in the introduction is not developed in the body. To strengthen the response, explain one or two health consequences more precisely and either develop the government role or keep the introduction aligned with the solutions discussed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay has a clear progression from the causes and effects of sleep loss to possible solutions, followed by a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is effective, and signposts such as “One of the most significant problem,” “There are several measures,” and “In conclusion” make the stages easy to follow. Supporting details are generally placed where readers expect them, including the workplace example in the solutions paragraph. The organisation is strong, though some links could be more precise and less formulaic. For example, “Therefore” introduces a summary of the preceding effects rather than a distinct consequence, and the conclusion repeats the main points without adding much synthesis. Use referencing and transitions to show relationships between ideas, and connect the proposed measures more explicitly to the problems they address.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “chronic sleep deprivation,” “sleeping routines,” “stimulants,” “work-life balance” and “disconnect from their work.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and “doomscrolling” adds a specific contemporary example. There are also several spelling errors—“physcial,” “concerntrating,” “heath,” and “heathy”—and some imprecise or awkward expressions, such as “catch enough sleep” and “serious long term health problems.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim for consistent spelling and more precise collocations, such as “get enough sleep” and “long-term health conditions,” while continuing to use relevant topic-specific language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
There is a useful mix of simple and complex structures, including the conditional example “When individuals regularly fail to catch enough sleep, they may experience…” and the purpose clause “allowing them to properly disconnect.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the paragraph structure supports the meaning. However, some grammatical errors persist in agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “One of the most significant problem” needs a plural noun, “a person who regularly sleep” needs subject–verb agreement, and “habits that helps” has a mismatch between the plural subject and verb. “At individual level” also needs an article. Review agreement and article use, and proofread sentence endings; greater accuracy across these structures would make the range more controlled.
