Student answer (Band 6.5)

The number of populations complaining about poor sleeping patterns has escalated compared to ancient days. I am of the notion that global change have been the one of the contributing factor. Life has changed to an extent that everyone is kept busy with either technology or work. For example, if one works at night it is clear that resting enough can be difficult even on off days because sleeping routines would have changed. The other thing is the use of technology such as mobile phones which make people get carried away forgetting time to take a rest.

Normally, lack of sleep have short and long-term effects. The effects include feeling tired, headaches and lower energy. For instance it is difficult for someone to pay attention to detail at work when you are worn out due to poor sleep. This therefore causes lots of errors in the workplace.

In the long run, prople end up having weak immune systems such that you catch cold easily. Lack of sleep also cause bad healthy habbits which lead to weight gain causing high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetes. Skin will look tired and slower to heal.

To curb poor sleeping habits, several practical measures can be put in place. Firstly, individuals should maintain a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Secondly, reducing screen time before bed and avoiding caffeine and heavy meals in the evening can significantly improve sleep quality. In addition, creating a comfortable sleep environment that is dark, quiet and cool plays a pivotal role in promoting restful sleep. Finally, adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as regular physical exercise, stress management and relaxation techniques can encourage better sleep.

In conclusion, poor sleep has serious effects on both physical and mental health, but it can be prevented through simple and consistent measures. By adopting healthy routines, improving the sleep environment and managing stress effectively, individuals can enjoy better sleep and improve their overall wellbeing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the task and maintains a clear focus: it identifies consequences such as tiredness, reduced attention, workplace errors, and longer-term health risks, then offers several practical remedies. The example of night work helps explain how routines can be disrupted, while the final paragraph clearly reinforces the proposed solutions. This is a solid response, although some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the links between poor sleep, unhealthy habits, weight gain, and specific illnesses could be developed more carefully, and the mental-health effects are mentioned only generally in the conclusion. To strengthen the response further, explain the cause-and-effect links in more depth and support one or two key claims with a more specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay is organised in a clear sequence: an opening discussion of changing sleep patterns, a paragraph on immediate effects, a paragraph on longer-term effects, practical solutions, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “For instance,” “In the long run,” and “Firstly” help readers follow the progression. The solutions paragraph is especially easy to navigate because its measures are presented in a logical list. At times, however, linking is somewhat mechanical, and a few connections between ideas could be made more explicit. For example, the opening moves from global change to night work and then technology without clearly showing how these examples relate to the main claim. Use more varied transitions and clearer references to connect causes, effects, and remedies.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing sleep and health, with useful topic-specific phrases such as “consistent sleep schedule,” “screen time,” “sleep environment,” and “stress management.” There is also some attempt at more formal expression, including “pivotal role” and “contributing factor.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “number of populations” is unnatural, “global change” is vague, and “bad healthy habbits” contains both an unsuitable word form and spelling errors. “Skin will look tired” is also imprecise. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for more idiomatic combinations and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses, as in “if one works at night” and “such that you catch cold easily.” Most ideas remain clear, and the solutions paragraph shows good control of longer sentence structures. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement and articles. For example, “global change have been the one of the contributing factor” should be revised to “global changes have been one of the contributing factors,” while “lack of sleep have” should be “lack of sleep has.” There is also a shift from “someone” to “you” in the workplace example. Check agreement, article use, and consistency of pronouns when editing.
