Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Stan,

I'm writing regarding your interest to apply for physiotherapy degree by next year, which was the same course I took. Physiotherapy is such a broad course, and it requires you to be good in basic sciences like biology, physics and chemistry. The degree runs the duration of five academic sessions, of which you will be required to clear all courses in each session before being promoted to the next.

My lecturers were the best, they made studying physiotherapy less stressful during our days. Also, my school clinic had most of the modalities we needed to practice, and also gave us the opportunity to start our clinic postings early, this made academic works to be less abstract. So, I'd love for you to apply to my school, you'll surely not regret it.

I believe you've already cleared your senior secondary school exams. You'll need to write an entrance exam in my school but first, you'll have to apply. The application will start in December and will run till February, after which the exam date is announced.

I suggest you start reading now and continue to fuel your ambition of becoming a physiotherapist in the near future.

Best wishes,

Mike.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you describe the five-session physiotherapy degree and its science demands, explain your recommendation through the lecturers and clinic facilities, and outline the application period and entrance exam. The advice is relevant and your friendly recommendation is clear throughout. Supporting details such as early clinic postings help explain why the university is suitable, rather than simply asserting that it is good. To make the response more fully developed, clarify practical application steps—for example, where to obtain the form, what documents to prepare, or how to confirm the exam date. The course description could also explain briefly what students study or do during the sessions, rather than focusing mainly on progression requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: course information comes first, reasons for recommending the university follow, and application advice appears in the next paragraph before a suitable closing. Paragraphing supports the purpose, and links such as “Also,” “So,” and “but first” help the reader follow the sequence. The organisation is consistently easy to understand. Some connections are less smooth because several ideas are joined in long sentences, particularly the sentence about the clinic, postings, and academic work. The repeated use of “also” is slightly mechanical. For a more polished flow, separate the clinic facilities from the early postings and use a more precise link to show how each benefit supports your recommendation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a personal letter about university study, including relevant terms such as “physiotherapy,” “modalities,” “clinic postings,” and “entrance exam.” These choices communicate the subject matter and show some willingness to use less common vocabulary. However, a few expressions are imprecise or do not collocate naturally, such as “apply for physiotherapy degree,” “five academic sessions,” and “academic works.” “Fuel your ambition” is understandable but sounds less natural in this context. These occasional word-choice and collocation issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and fluency. Aim for conventional academic phrasing while retaining the warm, informal tone appropriate for writing to a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including relative and subordinate clauses: “of which you will be required to clear all courses” and “after which the exam date is announced.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the letter’s overall message remains clear. Some grammatical errors are present, especially with articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries. For example, “apply for physiotherapy degree” needs an article, while “good in basic sciences” uses an unsuitable preposition. The sentence beginning “My lecturers were the best” joins two independent clauses with a comma, and the long sentence about the clinic also needs clearer punctuation. Review these patterns and divide lengthy sentences where necessary.
