Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Kevin,

I am extremely happy to find out that you are exploring different career options and more so that you are extensively inclined towards Electronics engineering. Having studied the same myself, I can tell you that this could be really nice choice.

Here are few basic details about this course in my university; it is a 4 year under graduate course that has 2 semester each year. You will have to study approximately 4 core and 2 non technical subjects during semesters. At the end of the academic year the university will conduct annual exams. I would suggest to get enrolled in the same university as I did. University of Gujarat offers top level of infrastructure and couching faculties they can help you on every step of your academic journey. You can apply by visiting front desk in the admin office. All you have to do is submit your documents.

I would like to meet you soon. Take care

Yours faithfully,

Steven

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing course details, recommending the university, and explaining the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the course is quite brief, and the advice on how to apply could be more detailed to provide a more helpful response. To reach a higher band, try to expand on your personal experiences or provide more specific reasons for your recommendations, which would make the letter feel more authentic and informative.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Here are', 'At the end of', and 'All you have to do is'. While the progression of ideas is clear, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow your points easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extensively inclined', 'infrastructure', and 'academic journey'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'nice choice' (which is a bit informal and vague) and 'couching faculties' (which appears to be a misspelling of 'coaching faculty'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and checking spelling will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Here are few basic details' (missing 'a'), 'has 2 semester' (should be plural), and 'at the front desk' (missing article). Additionally, the punctuation in the closing 'Yours faithfully' is incorrect for a letter to a friend; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes' would be more appropriate given the context. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter, and the grammar does not significantly hinder the reader's understanding.
