Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Dharvi,

I am writing this letter about the same course you want to pursue in my University.

I enrolled in Regulatory Affairs course at Northeastern University 2 years back. It is a very good course to do your master's in as i already have a brief knowledge. It includes various sections of regulatory strategy you can apply for different country. For Example, Food And Drug Administration is a regulatory body of United States as they are regulating all standards for food, medicine an many more items before introducing it in United States. I am recommending you to take course in this University, as this University is well-known for its high profile faculty. they are well educated and they are very kind and helpful in nature. Most importantly, their teaching methods is mind blowing, i have never seen anyone the way they taught to me.

If you are interested to take an admission in this course you can first create an account on Northeastern University portal, than prepare a SOP and take letter of recommendation from your school and submit all those in that portal and than just wait for the approval of admission. Their waiting period is about 2-3 weeks. Let me know if you need my help, i am here to help you at anytime.

Your Faithfully,

Shreya Soni

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: it describes the Regulatory Affairs course, explains why the university is recommended, and provides a clear step-by-step application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of the course content is a bit vague, and the description of the faculty could be more specific. While the task is fully addressed, the depth of the content is slightly basic, which prevents it from reaching the highest band. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the transition between sentences often relies on simple connectors like 'and' or 'then'. There is also a minor issue with paragraphing, as the body of the letter could have been split more effectively to separate the course details from the application advice. Despite these minor issues, the message is coherent and the structure is sufficient for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'Regulatory Affairs' and 'regulatory strategy'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'take an admission' instead of 'apply for admission' or 'mind blowing' which is too informal for a balanced letter. Spelling is generally accurate, but the overall lexical range lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in my University' instead of 'at my university'), prepositions, and subject-verb agreement ('teaching methods is' instead of 'teaching methods are'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The writer shows an attempt at complex structures, but control over these is not yet consistent.
