Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Maria,

I hope this letter finds you in great spirit. I am writing in response that you are seeking for an advice relating subject selection in my alma-mater. I hope to give you the best one regarding your pursuit.

I am the graduate of Pharm D batch 2021 from the most prestigious Punjab University. Now I believe this was one of my best on time decision. It's a 5-year historic journey having multiple ups and downs like huge syllabus, class duration, attendance, Vivas and practicals. But believe me after completion you could excel in degree command and flourish in every field of life because you have versatility in career.

My university ranks top-notch in pharmacy profession having excellent staff and markup collaboration with students in every matter. Moreover, it is the nearest option you can avail for degree completion due to availability of transport service next to door.

You must keep an eye on website portal for admission schedule to get on with scholarship criteria. I recommend you should have a physical visit for further details because things might change with the passage of time.

I hope you would understand my concerns and keep me updated about your plans and activities.

Pay my regards to everyone at home.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the Pharm D course, explained the benefits of the university, and offered practical advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning the 'ups and downs' of the course, providing one specific example of a challenge or a rewarding aspect would have added more depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'In addition' (implied), to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the course description and the university recommendation could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent; the current structure is clear, but using a wider variety of linking words would help the text flow more naturally, moving it toward a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'alma-mater', 'prestigious', and 'versatility'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'markup collaboration' is not a standard phrase in this context, and 'on time decision' should be 'timely decision'. Additionally, 'seeking for an advice' is grammatically incorrect as 'advice' is an uncountable noun. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, focusing on more natural collocations and refining your use of academic or formal terminology will improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I am the graduate of' (should be 'a graduate'), 'seeking for an advice' (should be 'seeking advice'), and 'I recommend you should have a physical visit' (should be 'I recommend you pay a physical visit'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on article usage and verb-noun collocations to ensure your sentences are more error-free.
