Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I just received your letter about course advice. I would love to help you.

Firstly, I took the Early childhood educator course in the university. This is really nice program including lots of information about kids behavior and how to help and support them. Students usually have to make assignments by the end of each term and the fee of this course is $7000. Learners have to do 3 practicums.

I took the university of Vancouver Island. This university is located in Nanaimo British Columbia. This university has a lot of international and domestic student and this is rich in cultural activities and environmental activities. The staff here is too friendly too.

Moving further, it is very easy to apply in this university. First, go to university website and then fill the application form. You will receive a confirmation letter in between 7 to 10 days. Once you get a confirmation letter just provide your documents required.

If you need any more help just let me know. i will be happy to help you.

yours ,

Soni

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the course, recommending the university, and explaining the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, when describing the course, you mention 'kids behavior' and 'practicums' but could have elaborated more on why these aspects were valuable or interesting to you personally. Similarly, the advice on applying is functional but lacks a bit of depth. To reach a higher band, try to expand on your personal experiences and provide more descriptive detail to make your advice more helpful and engaging for your friend.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moving further', and 'Once you get'. While these are effective, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and referencing. For instance, in the second paragraph, the transition between the course content and the fee could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the structure is appropriate for a semi-formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'practicums', 'application form', and 'confirmation letter'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'took the Early childhood educator course in the university' (should be 'took the Early Childhood Education course at the university') and 'I took the university of Vancouver Island' (should be 'I attended the University of Vancouver Island'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated adjectives and precise verbs would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'kids behavior' (should be 'children's behaviour'), 'This university has a lot of international and domestic student' (should be 'students'), and 'in between 7 to 10 days' (should be 'within 7 to 10 days'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as 'i will be happy' and 'yours ,'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralisation will help improve your accuracy.
