Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Kawal,

I hope you are doing well. I feel very happy that you thinking to take admission in same university which I chose. UBC comes in top three universities in the world. Also, you are a brilliant student in studies if you maintain an excellent GPA in your whole semester, you definitely get a scholarship for further semester. Students get not only the scholarships but also the bursaries. Further, some courses have a field trip that is beneficial for success in the course, and you experience a new thing as well.

If you get an admission in particular course that is kinesiology, then many career options open in your life. For instance, Instructor of the course, Dietitian and Consultant about healthy lifestyle. However, there is only one requirement that is you have to clear one more course as pre-requisites.

I know you can clear the entrance test. See you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Akash

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: it mentions the course (kinesiology), explains why the university is recommended (scholarships, bursaries, and field trips), and provides advice on applying (entrance tests and prerequisites). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation of the course is brief, and the advice on how to apply is vague, focusing only on a test and a prerequisite without explaining the actual application process. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'how'—for example, mentioning online portals, deadlines, or personal statements. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, but the content lacks the depth required for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is generally coherent, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use basic paragraphing to separate the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, you use 'Also' and 'Further' to start sentences, which feels repetitive. There are also some issues with referencing; for instance, 'that is kinesiology' is a bit abrupt. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, and ensure that your sentences flow naturally from one to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it is somewhat basic and occasionally imprecise. Phrases like 'I feel very happy that you thinking to take admission' are unnatural. You use some relevant terms like 'scholarships,' 'bursaries,' 'kinesiology,' and 'prerequisites,' which is good. However, there are errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'clear one more course' instead of 'complete an additional course.' To improve, focus on learning more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions that are suitable for informal correspondence with a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with verb tenses and articles. For example, 'you thinking to take admission' should be 'you are thinking of applying,' and 'in same university' should be 'at the same university.' There is also a lack of complex sentence structures; most of your sentences are simple or compound. While your meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and the limited range of structures prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
