Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hi Karan,

Its seems like the ages talking to you. How is uncle and aunty doing? I just saw your message few days ago and I am excited to hear that you are also planning to study abroad and specifically in an accounting in the Humber Polytechnic. Firstly, there are spectrum of merits for joining Humber and you will barely find any any reason for not joining it's accounting course. While talking about course here we have experienced professors with professional qualifications and they go extra miles to guide you in career as mentor along with academic course work. Then, we also have accounting center where where you can solve your doubts as well as study in quiet environment.

Further, you can also apply for numerous scholarship depending on your performance. There is Humber career website where you can not only just apply the field jobs but also guide you in resume and interview preparation for job hunting. For applying Bachelors of Accounting, you can either visit in person at register office or apply online via Humber website. Let me know the day of visiting so that I can plan for quick chat at cafe as well and see you soon!

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You provide details about the accounting course, explain the benefits of the university, and offer clear advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details provided are slightly more specific; for example, mentioning a specific module or a particular aspect of the campus life would add more depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Then', and 'Further' to guide the reader through your points. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical. Additionally, there are some minor issues with referencing and repetition, such as 'where where' and 'any any', which slightly disrupt the flow. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring more precise referencing would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'professional qualifications', 'academic course work', and 'scholarship'. There are some instances of awkward phrasing or minor word-choice errors, such as 'spectrum of merits' (a 'range of benefits' would be more natural) and 'apply the field jobs' (which is grammatically unclear). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation and idiomatic usage. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'Its seems like the ages talking to you' (should be 'It seems like ages since we talked'), 'specifically in an accounting in the Humber Polytechnic' (article and preposition errors), and 'register office' (should be 'registrar's office'). While these errors are frequent, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately.
