Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Smith,

I am writing this email to give you some vital advice related to the course which you are interested.

Firstly, I would like to inform you that I have just finished my business management course; it is two years long, and there are numerous subjects we need to study for getting good score. Also, I did my major in economics because I am into the subject.

In addition, I would like to recommend that if you like, you can join this course at the university where I did it, and that is Cape Britin University. Further, it has a good reputation and is well known all over Canada, as well as in India.

Finally, if you would like to get admission there, please first check some courses and their duration of time and also when classes will start, which will assist you in choosing the best for you. After that, you can make a call or email to the advising centre for assistance; they will do all kind of process for you.

I hope to hear from you good news about your course as soon as possible.

Kind Regards,

John.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the business management course, explained why you recommend Cape Breton University, and offered clear advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, personal anecdotes about your experience in the course to make the advice feel more authentic and engaging.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your points. While the structure is clear, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between discussing the course and recommending the university could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'that is Cape Britin University' is a bit clunky. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputation', 'admission', and 'advising centre'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'getting good score' should be 'getting a good score' or 'achieving high grades', and 'do all kind of process' is unnatural; 'handle the entire application process' would be more precise. You also have a spelling error with 'Britin' (likely Cape Breton). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and ensure consistent accuracy in your word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'related to the course which you are interested' is missing a preposition ('in which you are interested'). You also have minor errors with articles ('for getting good score') and pluralization ('all kind of process'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on preposition usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement. Your control of basic sentence structures is generally sound, but more variety in complex sentence construction would enhance your score.
