Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Abby,

I hope you are doing great !! I received your letter last week I was a little busy that's why I could not get back to you.

As you know I did an Early Childhood course from Seven Oak University. It was only a 3 month course with 1 month of practice in a daycare. I would like to tell you that you should not worry about anything about the university.

The management of this university is very professional and kind. They will respond to your concerns immediately and make you comfortable. They also provide you some discount if you have a language test from a designated collage.

It is very simple to enroll in this course. You will have to go on Seven Oak's website and you will be able to apply very quickly. There will be a few personal questions regarding your past studies and grades. Once you fill out the form then they will ask you to pay $2000 fee for your course. After the payment they will give you your class schedule.

hopefully, it will help you. I can't wait to see you!!

Love,

Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the Early Childhood course, explaining why the university is recommended, and offering advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though they could be further developed to reach a higher band. For instance, the description of the course and the application steps are quite brief. To improve, you could add more specific details about what you learned during the course or provide more nuanced advice on the application, such as tips for the personal questions mentioned.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the course description to the university's benefits and finally the application process. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between sentences relies heavily on simple structures like 'They also...' or 'There will be...'. To improve, you should incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore,' 'In addition to this,' 'Consequently') to create a smoother flow between your ideas and sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'professional,' 'immediately,' and 'designated' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the variety or precision required for a higher band. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'did an Early Childhood course' (better: 'completed a course in Early Childhood Education') and 'collage' (which should be 'college'). To improve, try to incorporate more specific, topic-related vocabulary and avoid repetitive phrasing to demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues. For example, 'I received your letter last week I was a little busy' is a run-on sentence that requires a conjunction or punctuation. Additionally, 'provide you some discount' should be 'provide you with a discount.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on sentence boundaries and ensure you are using articles and prepositions accurately.
