Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Raman ,

I was delighted to hear that you are thinking about applying for the same course that i studied at university . I strongly recommend it because i had a wonderful learning experience .

I completed a Bachelor`s degree in computer Science . The course included programming , web development , database management, and software engineering . We also worked on practical projects and attended workshops, which helped us improve our technical and communication skills.

I recommend this university because it has experienced professors, modern classrooms , and excellent library facilities .The teachers are friendly and always ready to help students . In addition, the university offers internship opportunities and career guidance , which make it easier to find a good job after graduation.

My advice to apply as early as possible and keep all your documents , such as transcripts and English test results, ready.

I hope you get accepted . Let me know if you need any more help.

Best wishes ,

Rajan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly described your Computer Science course, provided logical reasons for recommending the university (experienced staff, facilities, and career support), and offered practical advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more personal detail or specific examples of how the internship opportunities helped you, which would further enhance the development of your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'which' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and appropriate for a formal/semi-formal letter. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences more fluidly, as some transitions currently feel a bit mechanical. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the reader's understanding.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'database management', 'software engineering', and 'internship opportunities'. The language is natural and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor issues with capitalization, such as 'computer Science' instead of 'Computer Science'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the 'less common' or more sophisticated lexical items that would push the score into the higher bands. Focusing on using more precise adjectives and collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in '...workshops, which helped us improve...'. However, there are consistent errors with capitalization, specifically the lowercase 'i' used as a pronoun throughout the text. Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'Bachelor`s' (using a backtick instead of an apostrophe). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent attention to basic grammatical conventions like capitalization would improve your score.
