Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Simran,

How’re you doing? It’s been a long time since we last caught up! I’m so delighted to hear about your arrival to my college Northern Lights College to study Pharmacy Assistant course in the upcoming semester.

As I also graduated from the same course, I would love to give you some information about it which isn’t even included in the syllabus. Primarily, the course itself is very easy to understand and is completely doable. It’s mostly about communication skills, customer services and medical terminology which you are proficient in, owing to your medical background. Additionally, there are only a few assignments; since, it is based on one single project, which is due in the last week of the semester.

What’s more, the college is one of the most affordable colleges in British Columbia with advanced infrastructure and amenities. A separate building is available for practicals for better comprehension of the course. Moreover, college also promotes cultural diversity by organising festivals such as Diwali, Holi, etc.

As far as application process is concerned, it is pretty simple. You just need to submit the application online and follow up with records or student services, if you don’t receive response in 5-6 business days. Then, you’ll be assigned with a student number and will get access to student portal. That’s all about it.

Ask me if you’re a stuck somewhere. See you soon!

Love

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the Pharmacy Assistant course, explained the benefits of the university, and gave clear, actionable advice on the application process. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly, fitting for a letter to a friend. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear picture of your experience. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, and the response is well-structured to meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'What’s more', and 'Moreover' to transition between ideas effectively. The paragraphing is clear and appropriate for a letter format. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the course details to the university environment and finally to the application steps. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for this task. Phrases like 'advanced infrastructure', 'cultural diversity', and 'medical terminology' are used accurately. There are some minor informalities, such as 'doable' or 'stuck somewhere', which are acceptable given the context of writing to a friend. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise enough to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical range is adequate and used with good control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'assigned with a student number' (should be 'assigned a student number') and 'if you’re a stuck' (should be 'if you’re stuck'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence variety is good, contributing to a natural flow throughout the letter.
