Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Hira,

Hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to guide you about my course of Pharmacy at Government college university(GCU), as you mentioned in your last letter that you are planning to pursue same course at my university. I was overwhelmed after reading that we are going to study at same university even going to share same course as it helps both of us in every aspect.

Pharm D is one of the an emerging course in our country as it offers multiple options in job market as compared to other degrees. Its curriculum includes almost 15 subjects that covers all the areas like from basic human anatomy to complex physiology and then detailed effects of different medicines from clinical point of view.

I preferably recommend you to choose GCU as this field demands a lot of practical work and GCU has advanced and highly equipped labs. Teaching faculty is also very highly qualified and you will also get market exposure as faculty organise multiple educational trips.

I advised you to apply soon through university portal because admissions are open now and you will get discount in application fee if you submit your application 5 days before the deadline.

As we will be at same department I will also guide you about every detail.

Can,t wait to see you soon. Best wishes for the admission.

Yours sincerely,

Amna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the Pharm D course, explained the benefits of the university, and offered clear advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of why the university is recommended, citing specific features like the labs and faculty. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are balanced; for instance, the advice on the application process could be slightly more detailed to match the depth of the course description.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the greeting and purpose of the letter to the course details, university recommendation, and finally the application advice. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'as compared to', 'because', and 'as we will be', which help the flow. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the opening paragraph is slightly repetitive regarding the 'same university' and 'same course' phrases. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'curriculum', 'anatomy', 'physiology', and 'clinical'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'an emerging course' (should be 'an emerging field' or 'a growing course') and 'I preferably recommend' (should be 'I strongly recommend'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. You have a good grasp of general vocabulary, but incorporating more precise collocations would enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'the an emerging course', 'faculty organise' (should be 'organises' or 'organize'), and 'Can,t wait' (punctuation error). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and subject-verb agreement. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the sentences are generally easy to follow. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors like missing articles and punctuation, and try to incorporate a slightly wider variety of complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control.
