Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Barbara,

I'm delighted to receive your letter, and would love to provide you advice on the course you are thinking to choose for your higher studies. Therefore, I am writing to share some necessary details related to the course.

For my graduation, I chose Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy) to pursue my career in the field of pharmacy. During my high school, I completed my Co-op at the shoppers pharmacy, and till then I had made the decision to study and excel in this field. Most importantly, this course provide learners with both theoretical and practical skills, which are essential to gain enough knowledge in this subject. On top of that, it also teaches children on how to get better job prospects in this particular area.

From my point of view, I would highly recommend you the same university that I chose for my graduation. Firstly, it is a prominent university in the province, and has been awarded with excellence award for providing best education. Apart from this, professors are very well-educated and always ready to assist their students.

In order to apply for the course, you can visit the website online, and can apply easily, along with the administration fees, which will be around $100 dollars. If you face any difficulty while applying online, you can also visit the college in-person, and apply without any hustle.

Do let me know if you have any further queries. All the best for your studies.

Warm regards,

Manphool

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described your Pharm D course, provided logical reasons for recommending the university (such as its reputation and supportive faculty), and gave practical advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the response is fully relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all advice provided is logically consistent; for instance, mentioning 'administration fees' as part of an online application is clear, but ensure the details provided are specific enough to be truly helpful to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'For my graduation,' 'Most importantly,' 'On top of that,' and 'In order to apply.' While the structure is sound, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is effective, and the letter follows a standard, logical flow from the introduction to the conclusion. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices further to make the connections between sentences feel more natural and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'pursue my career,' 'theoretical and practical skills,' and 'job prospects' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'till then I had made the decision' (which should be 'by then') and 'without any hustle' (where 'hassle' is the intended word). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'this course provide learners' (should be 'provides') and 'recommend you the same university' (should be 'recommend the same university to you'). Additionally, 'thinking to choose' is better phrased as 'thinking of choosing.' While these errors are present, they are not frequent enough to cause confusion. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions with certain verbs to ensure higher accuracy in your complex sentences.
