Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Tim,
I hope this letter find you in radiant health and best of spirits. I received your letter a day before yesterday and I am glad that you finally decided to enrol in the Artificial intelligence course at the university. I completed the course last year and I can say that it helped me gain copious knowledge about the fast growing technology sector. It has 2 semesters, each of 5 month with 2 months for internship at the end. The complete course free was CAD 4000.
Ever since I took admission, I never faced any issue related to academics or administration. The staff at the university was really helpful. Since they have a provision of paying fee in multiple small payments, which is really beneficial for students with a weaker financial background and helped me too.
During our school days we always wanted to learn about robotic and their intelligence, didn't we? I would recommend you to directly visit the university website for admissions. There you will get up-to-date information. Additionally, I can give you my reference that will help you in the selection process.
Wishing you all the best for learning ahead. Hope to see you soon.
Yours lovingly,
Achin

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You provided details about the Artificial Intelligence course, including its duration and cost. You explained why you recommend the university, focusing on the helpful staff and flexible payment options, and you offered clear advice on how to apply via the website and your personal reference. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific content of the course to make the advice feel more personal and detailed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Since', which help connect your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'copious knowledge', 'provision', and 'selection process'. These choices are generally appropriate and help convey your message effectively. There are a few minor word choice issues, such as 'course free' instead of 'course fee' and 'robotic' instead of 'robotics'. While these do not impede communication, they show a need for more attention to collocations and word forms. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated idiomatic expressions or precise academic vocabulary related to university studies to enhance the naturalness of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' or relative clauses. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope this letter find you' (should be 'finds'), 'a day before yesterday' (slightly unnatural phrasing), and 'robotic and their intelligence' (should be 'robotics and its intelligence'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralisation will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
