Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

How've you been? I'm glad to hear that you have a plan to apply for the same course as I did at my university. I'm gonna tell you that University of Kerala is best known for offering Bachelor Degree in Physics.

If I were you, I wouldn't have had a second thought in joining this course, because our university has made immense contribution in the world of science, especially in physics.

There are both three year and four year program for this course, the former is just a Bachelor Degree whereas the latter is a blended format of both Master's and Bachelor degree.

Additionally, there had been a lot for prominent personalities who have graduated from here from the same program, and all of them are working in various branches of physics in different parts of the world. This makes it stand-alone compared to others in our state.

You may apply through the University website before 20 August, 2026, if you still wish to apply for it. All the best to the aspiring physicist in you, and see you soon.

Regards,

Gokul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the Physics course, provided a compelling reason for recommending the university (its contribution to science and the success of its alumni), and included practical application advice. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a consistent informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details about the course structure are slightly more precise, as the distinction between the three-year and four-year programs could be explained with more clarity regarding the specific curriculum.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You used some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'the former/the latter' to link ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further to avoid relying on simple connectors, ensuring that the flow between sentences feels more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'immense contribution', 'prominent personalities', and 'aspiring physicist' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'I'm gonna tell you' which is overly informal, and 'made immense contribution' which should be 'made an immense contribution'. While the vocabulary is adequate, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would elevate the response. The spelling is accurate throughout the text, which supports clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If I were you, I wouldn't have had...' and the relative clause 'who have graduated from here'. While these show a good attempt at complexity, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'there had been a lot for prominent personalities' (should be 'there have been many prominent personalities') and 'Bachelor Degree' (should be 'a Bachelor's degree'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally handled well. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve this score.
