Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sarah,
It was great to hear from you last week, and I'm absolutely thrilled to hear that you're considering applying for the Bachelor of Computer Science program at TechState University!
ince I graduated from the exact same course last year, I’d be more than happy to share my experience and give you some pointers. The course itself is highly practical and intense, but incredibly rewarding. In the first couple of years, you'll cover core programming languages like Python and Java, alongside software engineering principles. What I loved most was the final-year project, where we had to design an actual mobile application for a local business. It gave me real-world experience that helped immensely during my job interviews.I highly recommend TechState, not just for the academics, but for the entire ecosystem. The professors are exceptionally supportive and maintain strong links with tech industries, which opens up fantastic internship opportunities. On top of that, the campus facilities are state-of-the-art, especially the 24-hour computer labs and the modern library, making late-night study sessions much more manageable. When it comes to applying, my main advice is to start working on your personal statement as soon as possible. Make sure to highlight any personal coding projects or tech clubs you've been involved in, as the admissions team looks for genuine passion rather than just high grades. Also, try to submit your application at least a month before the early-bird deadline to give yourself the best chance of securing a campus accommodation spot.
Let me know if you want to garb a coffee sometime next week to look over your draft statement.
Best wishes,
Aesha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided specific details about the Computer Science course, such as the focus on Python and Java and the final-year project. Your recommendation of the university is well-supported by mentioning the supportive professors and state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, your advice on the application process, specifically regarding the personal statement and early-bird deadlines, is practical and relevant. The tone is perfectly suited to a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and encouraging register throughout. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, making the information easy to follow. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On top of that,' 'When it comes to,' and 'In the first couple of years,' which help to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, and the transition between the course details, the university recommendation, and the application advice is seamless. The overall structure is coherent and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a wide and natural range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context. Phrases like 'state-of-the-art,' 'immensely,' 'exceptionally supportive,' and 'ecosystem' show a high level of lexical control. Your word choices are precise and contribute to the clarity of your message. There is only one minor error: 'garb a coffee' should be 'grab a coffee.' This is a minor slip that does not impede communication. Overall, your vocabulary is sophisticated and used with great flexibility, fitting the requirements for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your writing displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and varied clause types. For instance, 'What I loved most was the final-year project, where we had to design an actual mobile application...' is a well-constructed complex sentence. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is used accurately to enhance readability. There is a minor typo at the start of the second paragraph ('ince' instead of 'Since'), but this is a rare, non-systematic error that does not detract from the overall high quality of your grammar.
