Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Martin,

How are you, I hope you are doing well.

I'm writing in response of your letter which I have received earlier this week. I selected Envirnmental science as a major course, It's releated to ecosystem and airpollution.

University of Otago is one of the best university in this country specially fields related to science. They have more than 1500 publications in environmental science. They have top of the line proffesor which have thier own publication in this topic. Moreover department of science is also equiped with highly tech labs and computers which we can use for our research.

Although criteria for this department is very though, you need to show some research work to get selected. on the other hand you also require good score in your IELTS exam. I will advise you to contact the proffesor in this department and show them your research work, If they like your research they going to offer you admission with the scholarship. You also can apply from the website.

I am wishing you very best for your admission.

Thank You,

Your sincerely,

Ali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the course, recommending the university, and providing application advice. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the course is related to ecosystems and air pollution, providing a specific example of a project or module would have made the description more engaging. Similarly, the advice on how to apply is clear, but could be expanded with more personal insight. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'on the other hand' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'on the other hand' which does not fit the context of adding a second piece of advice. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. The overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'publications', 'ecosystem', and 'scholarship'. However, there are several spelling errors ('Envirnmental', 'releated', 'airpollution', 'proffesor', 'thier', 'equiped', 'though') that detract from the quality of the writing. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common academic and professional terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If they like your research they going to offer you admission'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('proffesor which have thier own publication') and missing articles ('the department', 'the university'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices in the first and third paragraphs. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
