Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Nancy,

I hope you are doing well. I heard that you are planning to apply for the course at university where i studied. It is exciting news and before you proceed with application, I'm here to suggest and guide you about it.

I did post graduate diploma in Accounting and Advanced Accounting at Algoma university. It is a two year course. I'm belongs to 2023 to 2025 Batch the syllabus and exam pattern were bit different from Current.

Based on my experience, I did improved my skills in accounting well. Coming to management and study environment they hire faculty have who have at least 10 years experience which is beneficial for students, conducts weekly exam and gives proper feedback.

Before enrolling, I strongly advice you too visit University In-person to get know the application process than website is legit but still the chances of fraud is high. Carry all the documents mentioned in website along with copies if possible.

I wish you a very good luck.

Yours Lovingly,

Divya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You provided details about your course (Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting), explained why you recommend the university (experienced faculty and feedback systems), and offered specific advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for example, you could elaborate on how the 'weekly exams' specifically helped your learning process. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Before enrolling' and 'Based on my experience,' to link your thoughts. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is always clear. For instance, the transition between the course description and the recommendation could be smoother to enhance the overall progression of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'post graduate diploma,' 'syllabus,' and 'enrolling.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I'm belongs to' (should be 'I belonged to') and 'get know' (should be 'get to know'). Additionally, the phrase 'than website is legit' is informal and slightly awkward in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices are grammatically integrated into your sentences. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives would also strengthen your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I did improved my skills' (should be 'I improved my skills'), 'they hire faculty have who have' (redundant and incorrect structure), and 'I strongly advice you too visit' (should be 'I strongly advise you to visit'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading, particularly regarding verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and the distinction between 'advice' (noun) and 'advise' (verb).
