Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: it describes the Computer Programming course, explains the benefits of the university, and provides application advice. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, the advice on how to apply is a bit repetitive and lacks professional tone. The response is informal, which is appropriate for a letter to a friend, but the ideas could be expanded with more specific details to better demonstrate the 'why' behind your recommendations. Overall, the task requirements are met, but the depth of information is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Also', and 'Therefore' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and run-on sentences, such as in the second paragraph where multiple ideas are joined by 'and'. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall progression of the letter feels a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring sentences are clearly separated would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for a letter to a friend, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You rely on simple, repetitive language such as 'good score' and 'put information'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'technics' instead of 'techniques' and 'open door' instead of 'opens doors'. While the meaning is clear throughout, the lack of more sophisticated or varied vocabulary limits the score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic or professional terminology related to university applications and course descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('my university open door'), missing articles ('in 7 days'), and punctuation errors (e.g., 'I hope you doing well'). The sentence structure is often fragmented or run-on, which affects the clarity of your message. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on basic sentence construction, correct verb tenses, and proper punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
