Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Khang,
I hope you're doing great! I received your letter two days ago, in which I learned about your interest in applying to the business administration course that I took at the University of Alberta three years ago. The duration of the course is two years and it has twelve modules, each module consists of two mid-term tests and one final exam. You will attend practice classes and prepare presentations according to the given topics. But you don't have to worry about anything as the teachers are very friendly and supportive.
The University of Alberta offers better learning because of the experienced professors, technology and labs with modern facilities. Also, there are other activities that you may find interesting such as sports clubs. In this university, you will interact with students from different backgrounds that will improve your linguistic skills. The exciting part of the course is its tuition fee which is less than that of other courses.
Although there are many ways to apply, I will recommend you submit your application on the website by filling out a simple form which requires your previous study documents and language test. Make sure you apply before September 30. I hope my advice will help you're consideration of this study and let me know if more details are needed.
See you soon!

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the course structure, explained the benefits of the university, and gave practical advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader receives a comprehensive overview of your experience. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more personal insight or specific examples of how the course helped your career, which would add more depth to your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required bullet points. You use transition words effectively, such as 'Also', 'Although', and 'In this university', to guide the reader through your ideas. The paragraphing is clear and appropriate for a letter format. The flow of information is smooth, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that the connection between sentences is always natural; for instance, the transition between the course description and the university benefits could be slightly more fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task, using terms like 'modules', 'linguistic skills', and 'tuition fee' accurately. The language is natural and fits the context of a friendly letter. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in a semi-formal or informal context, such as 'hands-on experience' or 'competitive edge', rather than relying on more common descriptive phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as 'help you're consideration' (should be 'your') and the phrasing 'the exciting part of the course is its tuition fee', which is slightly awkward. However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the clarity of your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for small grammatical slips and try to vary your sentence beginnings even more to enhance the flow.
