Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Amanda,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share my experience and advice about the course which I recently finished at university.

Its been long since we met. I hope you are doing well.

I wanted to share my perspective about the Clinical research course which I pursuaded at Northeastern University. The course was about the basics of clinical research, informed consent, pharmacovigilance, ethics and good clinical practice. The course comprised of theoretical and practical sessions. Theoretical sessions were systematic and the professor who conducted the sessions was knowledgeable, friendly and easily approachable. Moreover, practical sessions were interesting with group projects which made learning simple. Northeastern University is very recognized in USA with attractive infrastructure and facilities. University offers suitable placement services at renowned companies with decent packages.

The course application can be done from admissions section on the offical website of University. The course information and fee structure is also mentioned in detailed brochure. I would suggest to visit the campus and get more detailed information about the course.

Please let me know if yoh need any assistance from my side.

Yours sincerely,

Vanessa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the Clinical Research course, explained why Northeastern University is a good choice, and gave clear advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening is more concise, as you repeated the greeting and the 'hope you are doing well' sentiment twice, which slightly impacts the flow of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'The course application', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between the opening sentences is repetitive, and some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more precise would enhance the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of your advice.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'pharmacovigilance' and 'informed consent' effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'pursuaded' instead of 'pursued' and 'very recognized' instead of 'well-regarded' or 'highly regarded'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated adjectives and adverbs to describe your experience, rather than relying on simpler descriptors like 'interesting' or 'simple'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Its been long' (should be 'It has been a long time') and 'The course comprised of' (should be 'The course comprised' or 'consisted of'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in USA' (should be 'in the USA') and 'on the offical website' (should be 'on the official website'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the mistakes do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding.
