Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Nupur,

I hope your are doing well. It's been so long we met and I am missing you a lot. Everything is alright? I am doing very well here. As you know I am still busy in university and a part-time job. About my university, It is MacEwan University and I took Mental Health Recovery Practitioner course. I studied a lot of subjects but the one which I really enjoyed learning is Suicide Intervention.

From my experience I would say, it is the best university in order to study. They arranged a lot of events. So, it is not only for study whole time but also for having some fun. The staff members and professors were very friendly and nice.

Moreover, you have to submit all your past academics in your application and also they will see your grades and If you will pass that you can get the admission here. As you know you are applying from different country, you will need language test bands.

If you need any of my help, i am always here for you. Hope you will get the best in your life you want.

See you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Yesha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the course, recommending the university, and providing application advice. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, when discussing the application process, the advice is quite general (e.g., 'submit all your past academics'). Providing more specific details, such as mentioning the need for transcripts or specific English proficiency scores, would have made the advice more helpful and fully developed. Overall, the response covers the requirements well but could benefit from more depth in the advice section.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'As you know', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph ('So, it is not only for study whole time but also for having some fun') feels a bit abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes slightly unclear, such as in the phrase 'If you will pass that you can get the admission here', where 'that' refers back to a general concept rather than a specific noun.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Mental Health Recovery Practitioner' and 'Suicide Intervention'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'submit all your past academics' is not standard; 'academic transcripts' or 'educational records' would be more precise. Similarly, 'get the admission' is less natural than 'gain admission' or 'get accepted'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'It's been so long we met' (should be 'since we met'), 'I am still busy in university' (should be 'at university'), and 'you are applying from different country' (missing an article: 'a different country'). Additionally, there are punctuation and tense issues, such as 'If you will pass that you can get the admission' (the conditional 'if' clause should be in the present tense: 'If you pass...'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit the score.
