Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ali,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to discuss about the course which you are going to study in university.

Now a days, finance subject is very much demanding all over the corporate sector. As you know, I also completed my finance course last year from NUST university. Although, you study accounts in your bachelor’s, but believe me finance will not be that much tough for you. Your masters in finance will give a brighter chance to get a good job opportunity as soon as you complete the course.

I will strongly suggest you to go in NUST, as many graduates from NUST are positioned in top notch corporate companies. In addition, if someone from NUST apply in these companies get a bit favour in selection process. Furthermore, the business school is very much popular in all over the country, everyone dream to be part of this business school.

Therefore, keep an eye on university website for admissions date. Hopefully, by next month they publish the dates. In meantime, prepare all your relevant document’s which you need before applying.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Shahrukh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You provided details about the finance course, explained the benefits of NUST university, and offered practical advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands your perspective on the course and the institution. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific content of the course to provide a more vivid picture for your friend, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. For instance, the transition between the course description and the university recommendation could be smoother to better connect the two ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'corporate sector', 'top notch', and 'selection process'. However, there are some instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'discuss about' (should be 'discuss'), 'finance subject is very much demanding' (should be 'in high demand'), and 'everyone dream to be part of' (should be 'everyone dreams of being part of'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and grammatical structures related to vocabulary usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Now a days' (should be 'Nowadays'), 'go in NUST' (should be 'go to NUST'), and 'if someone from NUST apply' (should be 'applies'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary apostrophe in 'document’s'. While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
