Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ram,

How are you? I hope you are doing good. I received the news from your mother regarding your decision of earning a Master of Mechanical Engineering from University of Windsor where I was also enrolled before five years.

Since I have pursued the course, I am in the better position to share some insight. This study will be completed in two years by achieving distinction in all four semester. Moreover, this structure of the course is on the proect based where professor will assigned the task which one has to accomplish it in certain time limit.

Additionally, I would emphasis you to enroll in this particular university because the major subjects are based on designing of automoubiles in which you have rich industrial exposure in India. In adition to this, several automobile companies are present in this area therefore it would be easy for you to secure a prestigious job after the studies.

Lastly, I would like you to share some insights on regarding the application for this college. The requirements are that one has to achieve a decent score in english language and one should have secured sixty percent in under graduate studies. I hope this information will be helpful for you.

Yours lovingly,

Nilay Shah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the course, recommending the university, and providing application advice. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed. For instance, while you mention the course is project-based, explaining how this helped you personally would have added more depth. The advice on the application process is a bit generic; adding specific details about the online portal or required documents would have made the response more comprehensive and helpful. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but more specific detail would elevate the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'In addition to this' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The flow between sentences is generally clear, though some phrasing, such as 'I would emphasis you to enroll', creates a slight disruption in the natural progression of ideas. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'distinction', 'industrial exposure', and 'prestigious'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'proect' (project), 'automoubiles' (automobiles), and 'adition' (addition). Additionally, there are some collocation issues, such as 'earning a Master' instead of 'pursuing a Master's degree' and 'before five years' instead of 'five years ago'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and careful proofreading to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. Examples include 'professor will assigned' (should be 'will assign'), 'I would emphasis you' (should be 'I would emphasize'), and 'the structure of the course is on the proect based' (should be 'is project-based'). There are also issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and verb forms prevent a higher score.
