Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Ryan,
It was great to hear that you are thinking about the same university course for your bachelor's degree. Since I completed it recently I would be able to give you a good idea of what to expect.
I studied chemical engineering from Gujarat Technological University, which was 4 years of course, it covers both technical and practical knowledge of some subjects like heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid mechanics and so on. One aspect I really enjoyed was working on the group projects, which helped me to build confidence and learn teamwork skill.
I would strongly recommend this university for several reasons. The lecturers are very knowledgeable and experienced, and they are always willing to help those students who are struggling in the particular subjects. The facilities are also excellent whether it is laboratories or library.
Regarding the application, I would strongly suggest you to apply it as soon as possible. Make sure you check the entry requirements and keep all the documents ready, and also prepare a cover letter in which explain why you are interested for this course and how you are suitable applicant.
I hope this suggestions helps you, and please feel free to contact me for any further information.
Thanks and regards,
Dhavan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the chemical engineering course, explained why the university is recommended, and offered practical advice on the application process. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' behind your recommendations, perhaps by sharing a specific anecdote about the facilities or a particular project, which would add more depth to your ideas and make the letter feel more personal and engaging.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a suitable closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Regarding the application' and 'One aspect I really enjoyed', which help the flow. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences within paragraphs is smoother. For example, the transition between the course description and the group projects could be more fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'chemical engineering', 'heat transfer', and 'fluid mechanics'. You also use some natural phrases such as 'thinking about' and 'feel free to contact me'. There are a few minor inaccuracies, such as 'teamwork skill' (should be plural 'skills') and 'suitable applicant' (should be 'a suitable applicant'). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your meaning is clear, there are several grammatical slips. For instance, 'which was 4 years of course' is awkward; a better phrasing would be 'which was a four-year course'. You also have some minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'apply it as soon as possible' (the 'it' is unnecessary) and 'in which explain' (should be 'in which you explain'). Despite these errors, your grammar does not impede communication, and you show a good grasp of basic sentence construction.
