Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear James,
I hope you are doing well. I heard that you are enrolling in the Business Plan course that I did last year at our university.
The course is really great if you want to know how a business launch and the various problems that individuals face while launching their own firm. Moreover, in this course you will have to create a business plan which will include everything about your business, i.e. your start-up funds, the problems that your business will address, and several strategies to survive in a competitive market.
This course will be very helpful for you since you are thinking about starting your own restaurant. Furthermore, university will not only teach you all those things, but also helps you to find suitable source of funding for your business if they like your business plan. Thus, applying this course at this university will be beneficial for you.
For applying it, you just need to go online to the university portal and pick this course when registration begins and pay the fee before the first class.
Good luck for this course.
Warm Regards,
George

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the Business Plan course, explain the benefits of the university, and provide a practical guide on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the connection between the course content and your friend's interest in starting a restaurant. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the university's atmosphere or campus life to further strengthen the recommendation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your advice easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Thus' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. While the overall structure is sound, the use of cohesive devices is occasionally a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of these connectors would enhance the flow and make the writing feel more natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'competitive market', 'university portal', and 'enrolling'. The language is generally precise and fits the context of a formal-informal letter. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'applying this course' (should be 'applying for') and 'launch a business' (which is slightly repetitive). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would help you achieve a higher score. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'the various problems that individuals face while launching their own firm' (missing a verb like 'are') and 'helps you to find suitable source' (should be 'a suitable source'). Additionally, 'Good luck for this course' is slightly unnatural; 'Good luck with this course' would be better. Despite these minor errors, your grammar does not impede communication and you show good control over sentence construction.
