Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neha,

I hope you are doing well and this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to give some advice regarding the same course that I did at University and same as I took.

First of all, I pursued a Bachelor of Engineering with the Computer Science and Technology at MGITER University before 3 years ago. 1furthermore, I had 8 subjects in each semester of four years. Moreover, I learned numerous languages regarding the computer programing. After that, there were several challenges related to practical exams and project presentations.

By the way, when I went to this University, I met an intelligent professor Mr. Desai. He was my favorite professor, because of his teaching techniques and extensive knowledge regarding the computer system, which could be useful for all students. So, I can recommend you for that course at this university. For your further process, you need to go to the admin office at the university and apply for your admission for the same course that I did.

Thank you for your understanding and consideration.

Best regards,

Lynn

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: details of the course, reasons for recommending the university, and advice on how to apply. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the course is quite brief, focusing on the number of subjects rather than the content or experience. The advice on how to apply is also very generic, suggesting a visit to the admin office, which lacks depth. While the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, the ideas could be more fully extended to better meet the requirements of a Band 7 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all,' 'Furthermore,' 'Moreover,' and 'By the way' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as '1furthermore' (which contains a typo) and the abrupt transition to the application advice. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different topics requested in the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their points clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'extensive knowledge' and 'teaching techniques.' However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'regarding the computer programing' and 'apply for your admission.' The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. Some errors, like the phrasing 'before 3 years ago,' are noticeable but do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'same as I took' (redundant), 'before 3 years ago' (incorrect tense/preposition usage), and 'recommend you for that course' (slightly unnatural collocation). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure occasionally feels repetitive. The errors present do not significantly impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to verb tenses and prepositional phrases would improve the accuracy.
